Is it possible to be protected when it comes to Social Networking sites such as Facebook and Myspace? Recent ad on BBC News titled "Facebook Security" states that security on these popular social networking sites should be automatic.
In the article, Dawn Teller, talks about how her identity was stolen online. She logged onto her online bank accounts and thousands of dollars were overdrawn from her account. She sat and thought about how someone might have accessed her information online and mentioned that her Myspace and Facebook pages displayed her name, birthday, address, and other miscellaneous personal information.
Yes, as well all know because the majority of us have our own Facebook or Myspace pages, you can keep things private. However, the question is, should these social networking sites automatically do it for us? I think so. I don't understand why so many people want thousands of people they don't know looking into their personal information and lives.
The article goes on discussing how they created a fictional character with a Facebook account and tested out different things within the sites. They asked 100 strangers to be friends and out of that 100, 35 said yes. All of these strangers got to see this characters personal information, such as address, name, and even phone number.
All in all, I just think people should be careful about who they are talking to on these sites and what their reasons are for using them. I personally do not put up any personal information on my sites other than birthday or email, but who knows, maybe that is even too much. I think they give you security option that people just don't take advantage of. I really hate how those social networking sites are going to soon use our personal information to target advertise. I guess it is just evolving and you can either stay in or get out.
